Brazil was originally formed as London in the summer of 2000 by the brothers Jonathon and Nicholas Newby. In early 2001 the band renamed themselves Brazil, taken from the Terry Gilliam film of the same name.

The band performed locally with a number of self-booked tours throughout the Midwest and East Coast. They collaborated with the Ball State University Symphony Orchestra for a three-part concept piece called "CONQUER." and performed an instrumental set for The Canon Theory Project led by public artist Matt Hoffman

In 2002, the band signed with Fearless Records to release the Dasein EP, which was followed by a round of tours with mewithoutYou, My Chemical Romance, Underoath and others.

In 2004, Brazil released their debut album A Hostage and the Meaning of Life, again with Fearless Records, touring in the following months with Coheed and Cambria, Sparta, and the Warped Tour.

The band signed with Immortal Records in 2006 to release The Philosophy of Velocity and after several more months of touring and growing financial difficulties, Jonathon Newby left the band in 2007. Brazil dissolved shortly after.

A final show was billed and performed on August 18, 2006, but the band publicly performed acoustic versions of select songs a year later in Muncie, IN. The band also played a reunion show in 2019 in Indianapolis.

Since breaking up, the band has released two self-produced, post-humous EPs titled ERE I AM, JH and The Author.
